2025 has already decided which trends to carry over from previous years, and Y2K-inspired decorations seem to be its favorite. Whether it’s bag charms, exuberant keychains, or phone accessories, our Instagram and TikTok feeds are flooded with these items. Some come straight from our childhood, like Hello Kitty-themed pendants or Baby Bratz, while others have been created specifically for this new trend. Among the most loved are the Sonny Angels, baby angels wearing various headgear. Many celebrities, like Rosalía, show them off on their phone cases. Another must-have for star collections and content creators are Sushi Cats, a literal hybrid of a nigiri sushi and an adorable kitten.
As we’ve mentioned before, other sectors in the fashion and beauty industries have also embraced this trend, launching products inspired by the 2000s: think mini lip glosses with hooks and beads, or luxury brands like Miu Miu and Fendi creating Scooby-Doo charms and Chupa Chups holders.
Labubu Mania: the Pop Mart toy that’s conquering the world
Recently, however, there’s been a new object of desire that has completely sold out: the Labubu. This toy, part of the “The Monsters” collection released by Chinese toy giant Pop Mart, was designed by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung and has sparked massive lines worldwide.
Why are Labubu toys so popular?
With a gremlin-like face, a plush rabbit-eared body, and a mischievous sharp-toothed grin, Labubu has captured the hearts of people of all ages. From pastel shades to fluorescent limited editions, collecting as many Labubu toys as possible is becoming an obsession online. What sets Labubu apart from other “Monsters” (such as Zimomo, Spooky, Tycoco, and Pato) is its superfan: Lisa, a member of Blackpink. Since the keychain pendants launched last October, followed by a pastel-colored “Macaron” series, the pop star has been spotted throughout 2024 with the tiny charm on her bag. In April, a photo of her hugging one of the large plush versions helped fuel this craze. Owning one of these toys also feels like a personalized experience since Labubu can wear outfits. Many stores have started selling clothes for them, and small businesses that sew custom outfits on request have quickly gained fame and popularity.
How to spot fake Labubu toys
Due to their recent surge in popularity, finding Labubu toys in stores or kiosks has become a challenge—and fakes have quickly appeared online. Here are some tips to recognize an authentic Labubu:
