Naomi Osaka is bringing the Labubu craze to the US Open.
For her opening match on Tuesday, Aug. 26, the 27-year-old tennis star faced off against Greet Minnen at New York City’s Louis Armstrong Stadium wearing an elaborate crystal-covered ensemble.
Osaka sparkled under the stadium lights in an embellished red Nike jacket over a matching Nike tennis dress with similar embellishments and a bubble skirt. As she walked onto the court, the athlete wore sparkly 3D roses in her hair, shedding all but one when it was time to play. Her sneakers, Nike’s GP Challenge I “Naomi Osaka,” coordinated with the color theme.
She topped off the look with a standout accessory: a custom bedazzled Labubu that she named after legendary tennis player Billie Jean King.
“She’s named Billie Jean Bling,” Osaka told reporters after her victory against Minnen, per CNN. Not Billie Jean King. Billie Jean Bling.”

Osaka also shared that planning her outfit for the match was a “little chaotic.”
“I was like, ‘Do you think this is possible?’ Maybe it was two weeks ago,” she said while recalling a conversation with her stylist. “Yeah, we kind of just toss ideas around. Obviously, the outcome is way better than I could have imagined.”
“It was really elaborate because the crystals are really hard to do on a performance outfit,” the athlete added.
Osaka explained that she thought the crystal embellishments would sparkle under the lights.

“I’m glad that my first match was a night match because this outfit was really fun to play,” she shared. “This is my night outfit, so hopefully, I’ll wear my day outfit next time. But yeah, it definitely was really elaborate.”
Osaka also hinted at future outfits.
“[The process is] not hard, but it always makes me excited for what’s coming up that people don’t know about,” she said. “So we always have fittings months and months in advance, and I know what next year is going to look like. That just kind of makes me excited to obviously do well so I can have a good court to wear these outfits on.”

Labubus have become one of 2025’s most sought-after toys.
According to POP MART’s official website, which sells Labubu and other blind box toys, the creature originated in 2015 thanks to artist Kasing Lung, who created a trio of picture books inspired by Nordic mythology.
While they’d been around for nearly a decade, the fuzzy, sharp-toothed creature surged in popularity after BLACKPINK rapper Lisa first shared images of herself with a Labubu in April 2024. Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and David Beckham have since sported the accessory on their handbags.
