More than 100 fake Labubu dolls have been seized by Trading Standards officers in the UK.
Counterfeits of the popular gremlin-like toys were found in shops in Elgin town centre, Scotland, due to safety concerns.
Although they’ve been around for a decade, the Chinese-made toys have become so popular around the world lately, mostly due to social media and celebrities and influencers giving them the thumb of approval, which has led to fakes flooding the market.
The novelty of the ‘cute ugly’ collectible is that you don’t know which character you’re going to get when you open the box and shiny foil.
Officers warn that the copies are made with harmful chemicals, contain small parts that pose a choking hazard, and have bad stitching that’s led to the stuffing being exposed, which increases the risk of suffocation.
People are being asked to be cautious when buying the toys. Moray Council Trading Standards has advised the public to check packaging for the name or address of a UK or EU supplier, look out for the CE or UKCA safety mark on the label, and check for a holographic Pop Mart sticker or QR code linking to the official website.
