Announced Oct. 14, the first Topps Labubu set celebrates the 10th anniversary of “The Monsters” series, which featured the first appearance of Labubu. The set includes artwork from Labubu creator and artist Kasing Lung, including images that mirror art installations appearing across the globe in support of The Monsters 10th Anniversary Celebration World Tour.
Labubu first appeared in The Monsters book series in 2015 but has recently gained popularity as a collectible through a toy collaboration with Chinese retailer Pop Mart. Labubu toys are typically sold in a mystery box format for between $20 and $30.
Popularity for Labubu has driven secondary-market prices upward, and even resulted in one 4-foot-tall figure selling for $170,000 at public auction earlier this year.
Third-party authenticator PSA announced in June it would begin grading identification cards included in boxes for the toys. The highest sale for a PSA-graded Labubu card to date is the $700 paid for a Have A Seat Clear Card PSA 10 on eBay earlier this month, according to data tool Card Ladder.
Secondary-market surges for Labubu cards are the latest in a recent hot streak for Topps’ entertainment and pop culture division, which recently released sets for Disney and the SpongeBob SquarePants TV show. According to data tool Waxstat, hobby boxes of SpongeBob SquarePants Chrome jumped to as much as $550 after retailing for $259.99.
Hobby boxes of Topps Chrome Disney have reached as much as $800 after retailing for $419.99.
