New year, new scents

Spice up your scent wardrobe with new perfumes from major beauty conglomerates.
Le Labo, under cosmetics giant The Estee Lauder Companies, has introduced a new scent to its Classic Collection, which includes cult favourites like The Noir 29 and Santal 33.
Eucalyptus 20 ($335 for 50ml) is an unexpected departure from the usual Le Labo scent profile.
If thoughts of koalas and Australia spring to mind, you are not too far off – it was inspired by vastness and endless kilometres of rolling red sand and sky. Resinous with a whiff of incense, the perfume combines the freshness of eucalyptus and cedarwood with the leathery warmth of labdanum, on a bed of musk notes and frankincense.

Meanwhile, L’Oreal-owned Aesop has launched a new scent reinventing the magnolia flower. Envisioned as a nonconformist floral, Aurner ($255 for 50ml) was created by Ms Celine Barel, Aesop’s long-term collaborator and the nose behind its popular Tacit perfume.
The name comes from an Old Norse verb meaning to be adorned or embellished with flowers. Instead of using the magnolia flower petal, however, the brand has chosen the magnolia leaf for a greener slant.
It opens with radiant, slightly spicy notes of citrus, cardamom and pink pepper, enriched by Roman chamomile, geranium and aromatic magnolia leaf, before settling into a warm, woody base of sandalwood, cypriol and cedar.

Sisley gets sensitive

French luxury skincare brand Sisley’s first big launch of 2025 is for those with sensitive skin. Kicking off a new range designed to calm and strengthen reactive complexions is Sisley Paris Dermatological Responses Soothing Care for Sensitive Skin ($265).
Its mouthful of a name holds big claims. Rather than just provide relief or be safe for sensitive skin types, the cream aims to enable the use of other products. This will give sensitive skin types access to more varied skincare routines targeting concerns such as anti-ageing and radiance, which can otherwise irritate skin.
To tackle this, Sisley developed a formula to counteract keratinocyte activity (the outermost layer of skin) to soothe discomfort and build resilience against daily stress, as well as restore balance by replenishing lipids to hydrate and strengthen the skin barrier.
Key ingredients in the plant-based formula include golden seaweed extract, said to reduce skin hyper-reactivity and minimise redness; Japanese lily of the valley extract to enhance skin resilience; and plum kernel oil for comfort and nourishment.
