In 2019, Lung collaborated with the Chinese toy company Pop Mart to introduce Labubu figures as part of their “The Monsters” series. Capitalising on the growing excitement surrounding these dolls, the decision was made to market them in “blind boxes” — a concept where buyers remain unaware of which specific version they will receive until the box is opened. Each sealed package conceals a surprise design, and this element of suspenseful unboxing further enhances the overall appeal of the Labubu Dolls.
While the plush toys have been around ever since, they became an overnight internet sensation the moment Lisa was spotted flaunting them on her bag, and everywhere else. With her mammoth K-pop fanbase, it didn’t take long for Labubus to spark a frenzy. Fans rallied behind them almost instantly, and what began as a cute accessory quickly snowballed into a full-blown fashion statement. The plush toys found their way into celebrity wardrobes, championed by global icons like Rihanna and Madonna, and embraced by trendsetters such as Dua Lipa, Kim Kardashian, Ananya Panday, and more. Even David Beckham and British rapper Central Cee, who clipped one onto his Hermès Birkin, are fans.
Growing demand
As of 2025, the Labubu brand has grown into a $1.8 billion industry, reports The Economic Times. Considering its rising global demand, Pop Mart’s CEO Wang Ning of China also had his wealth skyrocket, with his net worth increasing to $18.7 billion, according to Forbes.
For a while, the demand for Labubu Dolls became so intense that Pop Mart had to even suspend UK sales of the dolls following reports of physical altercations in stores, reports BBC.
