Labubu monster dolls are ugly and adorable
New monster dolls are taking over the internet. Influencers shell out as much as $85 for bigger Labubu dolls.
A strange-looking stuffed toy is taking the internet and collectors by storm. It’s called Labubu, and fans can’t get enough.
From pop-up lines stretching down the block to online bidding wars reaching six figures, the “so-ugly-it’s-cute” creature has become a must-have. Even celebrities are getting in on the hype.
So, what exactly is a Labubu, and where can you find one in Alabama?
What is a Labubu?
Think: part gremlin, part fairy tale monster. With a fuzzy body, sharp ears, wide eyes and a mischievous grin, Labubu looks like something out of Where the Wild Things Are. The creepy-cute aesthetic is exactly what’s driving demand.
Labubus come in all shapes and sizes, mainly as vinyl figurines and plush toys. The most sought-after? “Blind boxes.” These mystery boxes keep the character hidden until you open it, like a toy lottery. The thrill of the surprise, plus the chance to score a rare figure, fuels the craze.
More than just a doll, it’s a fashion statement
But it’s not just about collecting. Labubu has become a fashion statement. Fans clip them to backpacks and belt loops, even turning them into full costumes. They’ve been spotted everywhere, from cosplay events to pride parades and political protests.
Where did Labubu originate from?
The quirky creature was dreamed up in 2015 by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung as part of a Nordic-inspired picture book series called The Monsters. Four years later, Chinese toy giant Pop Mart brought Labubu to life as a collectible, and a cultural icon was born.
How much does a Labubu cost?
In the U.S., prices for Labubus on the Pop Mart website range from $15 to $959.90. Third-party websites list them at $5,145 and above.
Labubu or Lafufu?
With prices climbing and demand skyrocketing, spotting a fake Labubu, or Lafufu, is more critical than ever. Collectors online have shared plenty of tips, but two key details can help you know if yours is the real deal:
Count the teeth: Authentic Labubus have exactly nine.
Scan the QR code: Real ones come with a QR code that links directly to Pop Mart’s official website.
Is your toy missing, either? It might be a good idea to double-check before paying top dollar.
Where can I buy a Labubu in Alabama?
If you’re hunting for a Labubu in Alabama, your best bet is online. Since there’s no Pop Mart store in the state, the official Pop Mart website is your go-to source.
Act fast, as restocks sell out quickly. Most drops occur at 9 p.m. CST, so it’s worth following Pop Mart’s social media or website to stay informed about when drops will be scheduled.
Some Alabama shoppers say they’ve stumbled on a Labubu or two by chance, but most Reddit and Facebook users report better luck sticking to official online releases.
